Kiva

I was so excited to discover a grrrrr-eat website, via the Good News Network. Kiva.org "lets you lend to a specific entrepeneur in the developing world - empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty."

Microloans are a powerful tool for helping people break out of poverty. Without a good credit history or collateral, the very poor are unable to access loans from traditional financial institutions. Through microloans, so many people have been able to start and maintain their own businesses, gaining not only financial security, but also pride and dignity.

Kiva is a really unique service that connects willing lenders (who can loan as little as $25 to a specific entrepeneur) to Field Partners, who assess loan applications and manage the loan, including distributing funds and collecting repayments. Loans requests posted on the website top out at $1200 and have an incredible 99.71% repayment rate.

This is so accessible and can make such a huge difference in the life of a real person who just needs a break. If you want to know more, visit Kiva's FAQ page or watch this PBS Frontline video. And think about it! I would love to hear from anyone who decides to give it a try.

Wow! That's really awesome! I'll have to check it out!

LOL.. at first Malcolm was just "Pumpkin", but then during the game he began to exercise his klepto skills, grinning at us and asking, "Can I steal this?" So then he evolved into "funny pumpkin."

Has Maren heard back about the lemonade stand yet? And how are your dealings with the evil computer conglomerate? I'm prayin.'

Ah yes, my mini-klepto. He's definitely the sneakier of my two offspring.

Yes, Maren's all set to go on the lemonade stand... and I've given up altogether on the evil computer conglomerate. Thank goodness for techie friends!

Hey Mel,

I gave Kiva a try. However, since the re-payment plan is 18 months, it'll be a while before I can let you know how it works out.
