True Story

"Those who believe they believe in God but without passion in the heart, without anguish of mind, without uncertainty, without doubt, and even at times without despair, believe only in the idea of God, and not in God himself." Madeleine L'Engle

A few friends surprised me on my birthday with cheesecake, some funky photo holders, and a $75 (!) gift certificate for Chapters. Although I traditionally hoard gift certificates until the very eve of expiry, I'm considering blowing it all on books by Madeleine L'Engle. She is best known as a children's author, but I really appreciate the books she has written on life, faith, and art. Her words give voice to many of the thoughts and feelings I've held close. Of course, there's also a collection of short stories by Carol Shields on sale. And Douglas Coupland's new book is due out next month. And Dropped Threads 3 is about to release. And I'd love to get my hands on PostSecret. And.... Hmmm, perhaps further deliberation is required.

In other news, this week has seen record-breaking birthday cake numbers. I received four gateaux d'anniversaire from Monday to Thursday, consecutively. Cake numbers are expected to return to seasonal norms by my 29th birthday.
