Well, well! Haven't we just been busy beavers over here?
After making our rounds in the neighbourhood to pick up bottles last Saturday (including from Aidan's house, where they had already been collecting), we had to call in reinforcements for Sunday, there were so many! We had seriously underestimated the very generous response from the community (and their enthusiasm for beverages in glass bottles).
So several hours of sorting and counting and three very full trips to the depot (think Tetris) netted us a total of ... drum roll, please ... $267.35! (And counting: there are a few more households that have bottles to contribute.) And one neighbour called us to say that he wanted to "top us up" once we had collected everything, so he is planning to bring the total to $400. Isn't that amazing?!
The kids have been very excited to see how their idea to help Haiti has grown and a really proud of the accomplishment, even though it took a lot of hard work on their part. I can honestly say that I didn't realize how big of a project we were getting ourselves into, but that I'm so glad that we were able to support their impulse to respond with help.
(Unfortunately we didn't get any pictures of the process, but maybe we'll snap a few before the final trip to the depot.)
