Easy Bake Easy Sell

Here's a little snatch of conversation from our house this week...

"I want one of those little oven things that are so cool. You can actually make real stuff you can eat in them in these tiny pans and stuff."

"An Easy Bake Oven?"

"Yeah! They're so cool!"

"Hmmmm... I think you might find it a little bit boring because you guys are used to making real recipes."

"No! It's super neat!"

"What do you find interesting about it?"

"Well, it's blue on one side and red on the other...."

"Neat. Where did you see it or hear about it?"

"On TV."

"On an advertisement?"

"Yes. (pause) And I think that advertisement is working really well on me!"

I always wanted an Easy Bake oven too. I think they still look cool.

I never hear about an Easy Bake Oven without remembering how much Chris wanted one as a young boy.At that time, gender roles were strongly impressed upon parents by other adults in not-so-subtle verbals & non-verbals. Bob and I bought Chris the oven, however, and put it in the attic until Christmas.
By the time Christmas arrived, we had received so much flack that I, the people pleaser, took it back and bought a replacement item. It's a decision I have always regreted for disappointing him and "caving" to a few bullies.

Rach - I always thought they were pretty cool, too.

Barb - Awwwwww... what a bittersweet story. I'm impressed that you bought it in the first place, actually! Malcolm has been equally smitten with the Easy Bake Oven, too.

I also always wanted an Easy Bake oven. The fact that my current oven really isn't that much bigger than an Easy Bake doesn't make the idea of an Easy Bake any less appealing.

Barb, I always asked for HotWheels for Christmas. As far as I know though, my parents never considered it.
