Farm Share!

We've begun receiving our farm share boxes -- oh joy and blissful splendor! I can't tell you how good it feels to eat clean and local food grown by farmers we speak to every week or so. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to buy everything from cheese and pasta to fresh produce and eggs (and a little meat now and then) at our local farmer's markets, knowing that it has been produced sustainably within an hour's drive from here. And NOTHING can compare to the sugar snap peas! (If you haven't had them yet, be sure to get yourself to either market this Saturday.)

Here's what will be in tomorrow's basket... there may be more garlic scapes than I know what to do with, so give me a shout if you'd like to sample them. (They are deliciously mild, like green onions/scallions.)

1. Jericho Romaine Lettuce
2. Cherokee Red Leaf Lettuce
3. Vitamin Green
4. Napoli Carrots
5. Sugar Snap Peas
6. Garlic Scapes

For an excellent interview with Barbara Kingsolver on the subject of local eating (based on her most recent book, Animal Vegetable Miracle), check out The Ethics of Eating (from the radio program Speaking of Faith). You can listen online or download the audio.

Oh fun! You started receiving it. Looks like you've got lots of goodies in there. Has it been a big struggle to know how to use all of the produce you get, whether due to the amount or the "what is this" factor?

We actually got our first box last Wednesday and had no trouble at all gobbling it all up! I expect that we'll run into more of the "what do you do with this?" problem as the more exotic Asian produce starts arriving.

Want a few scapes? They are DELICIOUS, but we'll never use that many. Good in salads and whatnot...

I'd love to try a few scapes! :) Thanks for being willing to share!

Hey,
How do you go about getting these boxes? I am starting to really want to get more and more produce and food from local vendors, so let me know. I took a cooking class from Chef Micheal Smith from the food network last week. He is SUPER passionate about this subject which really made me passionate. Keep in touch!

Hey Kyla,

What a great opportunity to take that class! Did you have to sell your soul to get in? :)

I love that you're interested in local food (definitely listen to that Barbara Kingsolver interview... I know you'll find it fascinating) -- I'm passionate about this subject, too, as you can tell.

It's probably too late to get a farm share box for this season, unfortunately, although I can give you contact info and you could see if you could be put on a cancellation list (if they have such a thing). They are already taking names for next year! The other local organic farm is also probably going to start up a farm share program next year, so you could try that list too. If you want the specifics, you can send me an email: mmealey at rogers, com. (That's my fancy-schmancy don't-steal-my-personal-info internet code!)

The VERY best way to get local produce now, though, is to go to the market. ♥ Both markets have an excellent selection of fresh and seasonal vegetable goodies from farms in our area. You can also get eggs, chicken, beef, cheese, yogurt, a few fruits and berries, fresh roasted nuts, decadent pastries, homemade dips, or a whole gallon of goat's milk for $6 (!) -- which is not really my thing, but maybe it's yours.

Give me a call/email if you'd like to join me on a Saturday morning for a little market tour!

Oh yeah,
I am familiar with the markets. We've been going to the market for years. When I can get there I usually always get my produce, I was just a bit curious about these boxs. Micheal Smith was saying he gets one delivered to his house in PEI then you were writing about it as well.
Dave has been passionate about this a lot longer then me. Just took me a bit longer to grasp at the idea and really think about it. Better late then never. Thanks for writing back.
The cooking class was amazing. Nope, didn't have to sell my soul, it cost $35 (which we paid and signed up for 2 months in advance) and all of the proceeds went to the Superstore Charity. We spent about 2 ours just listening to him and eating a four course meal. What a blast...I truly loved it..and well him!
Talk to you again soon...
