"You can read along with me in your book!"

I dug out my old record player and 33⅓RPM story records yesterday, to the delight of both my children, but especially Malcolm, who loves to listen to audio stories. Over. And. Over. It is quite possible that he could do nothing but listen to stories all day. Or just the same story. All day. I always chuckle inwardly when people accuse children as a species of having short attention spans.

In addition to the tiny 33⅓ records, I had one huge LP, bigger than my head: the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack. How I loved that record! Such nuggets of wisdom in those jaunty little tunes! "I often give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it." Mmmmhmmm, preach it, Alice. "Statistics prove, prove that you've one birthday, just one birthday once a year. But there are three hundred and sixty-four UNbirthdays!" Isn't that the truth? The statistics are indisputable, but the shift in perspective is inspiring.

My long-suffering grandmother watched me dance to the entire record once when she came to visit us in Edmonton. What a woman.

Thanks to the wonder of the internet and expired copyrights, you too can enjoy ancient children's records without the fuss of actual records at Children's Vinyl Record Series and Kiddie Records Weekly.

Ha! We also spent hours listening and reading along. I remember listening to 101 Dalmations over, and over, and over again.
