Pedal Power!

Shana Tova! A Good Year! Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) began yesterday at sundown, so Malcolm has a generous four-day weekend. I'm debating whether or not to enforce bike-riding anyway.

Its a bit of a trek to get to the preschool and back. Probably an hour or more one way, if the kids were to walk. But they are getting a bit heavy to pull around in the wagon nowadays, considering that their combined weight is nearly ninety pounds. And I'm reluctant to cart them around when they are perfectly able-bodied.

My "brilliant" solution to the problem of transportation has been biking. Yes! Well... no. We've had a great deal of trouble finding training wheels to fit Maren's bike properly, so she's pretty tippy. That might not be a problem for a kid who feels confident on a bike--it wouldn't be a deal to Malcolm--but she's not quite there yet. So between crashing and wind resistance and sore legs and the stress of starting school, we haven't had a tear-free day yet. Oh dear.

They were quite impressed with themselves yesterday, though, when I told them that sore muscles are a different kind of growing pain: instead of growing longer, their legs are growing bigger and stronger. "That's a good sign, then, when my legs are hurting!" Maren said perkily. And they think leg massages tickle and using a rolling pin on their calves is hilarious. So it might be okay.

Until it snows.
