Scalpel...

This morning, Malcolm wanted to bring Elmo out of the closet. A few years ago, he was enamoured with the character of Elmo, but we couldn't find an Elmo toy that didn't make noises and do stuff. We settled for a "potty-training" Elmo, since Malcolm was in that stage. But what a racket! What a stress-inducing furry little creature, delivering rapid-fire commands! "I need a drink! I need to go potty! I NEED TO GO POTTY!" Thankfully, Elmo was equipped with an internal on/off switch.

Today, though, we found a more... permanent solution, shall we say? Only one little half-truth was required (I think it's true that Elmo doesn't work properly, even with the batteries in). The voice box-removal surgery was fairly quick and uncomplicated... a perfect opportunity for my young assistant to perform the suturing. Malcolm is very precise with a needle and thread and didn't poke himself even once. He's pretty proud of his handiwork!

Wow Malcolm that's really cool that you can sew! Did you know that I'm 25 and would have no idea how to even begin to use a needle and thread? In fact Jason lost a button off his shirt once and I told him that he was going to have to throw it out because I didn't know how to fix it (don't worry he took it to my mom). Now we'll just take all our sewing to you, what do you think of that? Ha ha... Perhaps you can teach me some time :)

You remind me of a guy in university who asked if I could sew a button back on his shirt. I said I could, and he asked how much it would cost. :)

Here's a hint: the key is little dots in ballpoint pen!

here's a hint: I've got no idea what you're talking about :)

so what do a ball point pen and sewing have in common?

wait I may be having a light bulb moment or a stupid one depending on if I'm right or not....do you put dots along the fabric for Malcolm with the pen so that he knows where to sew? I still don't think that would help with a button

see this is why people like me keep sewing places in business....too much work and hassle....guess some would say that about my baking obsessing though huh?

K, I'm really going to stop processing on yuor blog now :)

You're allowed! Yep, that's exactly the trick... although it probably wouldn't work for buttons, you're right. :)

I usually position the button, then use a pencil to mark the holes. That way, I can start the thread in the right place and don't sew the button askew.

Wow, I didn't know there could be this much conversaion over a button. Been sewing them on forever, but it is a task that requires fairly good eye hand coordination, but what can I say! My grandchildren are the best.
