My Funny Valentine

Maren has, unaccountably, been so excited about Valentine's Day this year. She was very disappointed, however, that there wasn't anything under her pillow this morning. She said that "my brain told me" a Valentine's Fairy would come put something under her pillow last night. (?)

One of her homework assignments last week was to write valentines for her class and teachers—22 in all! She figured out how many she would need to do each day using 22 pennies and a calendar, and had them all done by Friday. But when her grandmother gave her a box of valentines yesterday, she decided that everyone should get two valentines from her... so she wrote 22 more last night! Maren is the absolute model of perseverence when she puts her mind to something.

I love her independent spirit (most of the time!). She has firmly decided to write the letter "a" as it appears in print, and could not be persuaded to fold the valentines so that the name showed on the outside. Although it can be frustrating when her choices conflict with the way I want things done, I hope she keeps her sense of individuality and confidence... and still values community and loving relationships. Oi vey. Parenting seems like an elaborate balancing act most of the time!
