Maren enthusiastically counted the marching bands during the Santa Claus Parade. At one point, she turned around to say, "Mama, there's something I want to tell you. I don't know how I started to like marching bands, but I just love them so much!"By the time the thirteenth marching band passed, though, she changed her mind to decide that Santa was her favourite part of the parade, because "he looks like the real Santa." Quite a change from last year's announcement that she didn't think it was logically possible for Santa to do the job of delivering all those presents in one night!
Our family is considering some new Christmas traditions. I'd love to hear from you: How does (or did) Santa fit into your Christmas celebrations? How do you keep the priority on other important aspects of Christmas (like family, giving, and the birth of Jesus)?

We started doing this interactive reading of the Christmas story last year: I had written out five different parts of the Christmas story (in easy language - none of this, "Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy"!) for each of us, and we all have an unlit candle in front of us. The room is dimly lit by one candle. After reading our part,(Dave, Elijah and I read, we helped Zeke with his, and one of us read on behalf of Noah) we light our candle. In the end we all have a lit candle in front of us to remind us that Jesus - The Light of the World - was born today. The kids really liked it. We plan to do this every year, and it will be fun to see how the tradition evolves as our children grow up!
Also, for Thankgiving, we have a tablecloth that can be written on (every year we write what we're thankful for...in permanent marker), and we're going to do a tablecloth for Christmas this year too. Maybe we'll write a favorite memory, favorite gift, a short prayer...or whatever. It will be fun to spread it out on the table every year and read the things from Christmas past!
sorry, can't help you there. my mom would get us soooooo wound up about santa coming that we wouldn't be able to sleep on christmas eve. we'd listen to the radio and hear the norad updates about an unidentified air craft coming from the north.
