The Magical Loaf Studio

Hooray for the Magical Loaf Studio! Not only can you create your own vegetarian loaf recipe based on the ingredients you'd like to use from each category (protein, carbohydrate, vegetable ...), the leftovers make a great vegetarian Shepherd's Pie.

And by the way, can I just take a moment to say that the whole concept of Shepherd's Pie is messed up? Real Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb. Lamb. Shepherds. Does this seem a little strange to anyone else? I thought shepherds were in the business of protecting sheep from being eaten.

Anyway, pop over to the Magical Loaf Studio and give it a try. If you do, though, you're probably going to want to cut the salt in half and make sure you use enough liquid. My first loaf was reminiscent of dulse: dry and salty. More success was had with the second attempt -- tasty, especially with a mushroom gravy over it.

Alright, I'll cut the cooking chatter for those of you who are just here to see cute pictures of my kids. (Scroll down and you shall be justly rewarded.)

Isn't Vegan shepard's pie a bit of a paradox?

sounds yummy, but please please please keep the good name of shepard's pie for lamb.

Hunter's pie - deer

not sure what ground beef is, cottage pie perhaps...

but please, the entire point of scottish food is to clog arteries, not to clean them.

See, Hunter's Pie, that makes sense. The intentions of a hunter toward a deer are unambiguous. This Shepherd's Pie thing is a little sketchy, though. I think I'll take paradox over suspiciously malevolent!

Maybe the shepherd only uses sheep that have been killed by natural (or wolfish) causes.
