Malcolm chose to buy a football with his birthday money. It has become his new teddy bear - he takes it with him to bed, on walks, family outings, and anywhere else we let him, basically. (It usually stays home if there will be other children involved who might not appreciate a ball in the face.)
He informed me today that when he grows up he wants to be a football player, hockey player, soccer player, and basketball player. "Oh! Well, you'll be very busy!"
Maren doesn't have much interest in athletics, other than dancing and "swimming" (splashing). She enjoys the inner life more - imagining and creating, singing and reading and drawing. For whatever reason, Malcolm has loved to play sports, and has much more natural ability. He was a sure shot with the soccer ball by his second birthday, while Maren is still working on accuracy. It's funny how different kids from the same family can be from one another.
