School was over for the kids a few weeks ago and they both have shed a few tears about missing their teachers... wow, huh? You know the teachers are doing a good job when that happens. Malcolm ended up with the Math Award for his kindergarten class and they both had sparkling report cards. It's such a pleasure to hear that the teachers share our good opinion of our children. (^_^)
Last week I finished up a spring course in Children's Literature, which was great and interesting and gave me the opportunity to read through some old favourites again. It also turned out to be a lot to handle. The guideline for profs is to assign 3 hours of work per hour of class time, so that was 18 hours in papers and reading on top of 6 hours in class... per week! On top of 35 hours of work for my summer job! Yikes!
I am so glad, though, that I took the course, since I've just discovered that concurrent Education students are supposed to take 6 courses per semester. I can get away with taking the standard full load of 5 courses since I've taken summer and spring courses, which is a HUGE relief and hopefully means a little less stress and time away from the family during the school year. That reminds me: I was accepted into the Bachelor of Education program... YAY! They only take about 20% of the applicants for a year, so I am really thankful to get in on my first application.
In other news, I am workingfull time for our church this summer through Mennonite Central Commitee's Summerbridge program, so I get to do all kinds of fun things with kids and worship and social justice projects. It also meant that I spent 4 days in Winnipeg for an orientation conference and met fellow Summerbridgers from across Canada, who are a pretty great bunch. (Especially those Maritime folks!) And I ate ice cream. And spent birthday money. And played ultimate frisbee until it was too dark to keep going. And got soaked up to the thighs walking through grassy paths in the woods. AND! Didn't get a single mosquito bite. Take that, Winnipeg!
ETA: There were two things I noticed about the folks who work at MCC and at CMU (Canadian Mennonite University)... they laughed and smiled a lot, and they didn't take themselves too seriously, poking fun at our tendency toward self-righteousness. I like that. I hope I can gain those qualities as I mature.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch... as soon as I got back from Winnipeg, we headed out to Cape Breton for Mom's wedding. Maren and Malcolm were the flower girl and ring-bearer (we like to call him Frodo). Malcolm ended up at the front without the rings... an omission that wasn't discovered until it was time for Mom and Bobby to exchange rings! (Giggles and belly laughs ensued.) Mom had a great dress that fit her style, and had some pretty amazing makeup and hair (if I do say so myself!). They did a great job of incorporating their interests and personality in the wedding, including the bride's arrival on a 4-wheeler and the groom's custom embroidered ball cap. It was very cool to see most of my cousins on my mom's side, too, most of whom I haven't really seen since we were kids.
And finally, I got an awesome new tat this morning, courtesy of my husband:

Why yes, hip hop IS my life, thank you for asking. Aaahh yeah.

Wow does Malcolm ever look like Mitch in this picture!
Ohhhhhh, this pic of Maren & Malcolm is exquisite! It fills my eyes with tears just to look at them: They look like characters right out of a sea novel.
I often wonder how I can be so privileged to have five such loving, adorable grandchildren?
And, Melanie...kudos to you on having worked so hard! You deserve every mark and placement.
I didn't know hip hop had banjo in it?!
I agree with Barb, the pic of Maren and Malcolm IS exquisite!!
It's my vote for the next pic giveaway!!
The children were just precious at the wedding. Malcolm, the true little man, and Maren, the princess. I agree Barb, we are truely blessed with beautiful grandchildren
LOL FRODO!!! And that's one reason why you guys are my friends! You dubbed your ringbearing son Frodo. :) Congrats on the new job and, again, on the ed program! You and all your fellow classmates need to read "Boys Adrift"! It's my new recommended reading for you. :)
