Parent-teacher interviews were this week. (I've always wondered why they make us sit in those tiny kid-sized chairs. Surely it wouldn't be impossible to bring in a few regular-sized chairs from the cafeteria?) I hope these interviews are always as pleasant as they are now... it's nice to hear other people gush about how wonderful your kid is. (^_^)

My wish for the snow to hold off until November has come true (thank you, Winter!). The air is crisp and invigorating, the smell of crackling leaves rises up from the ground, the sun still shines, the trees are between the beautiful blaze of their last days and the minimalist art of bare branches... I am in love with the autumn!

My student loan has come in, so HURRAH!, the bills are all paid, the van is registered, I have a backpack that isn't falling apart at the seams, Mitch has cozy slippers to keep his feet warm on the hardwood, and the kids have long johns! Maybe we'll even have the furnace cleaned before we turn it on for the season. Thank you, Government of Canada!
Oh, and! I was so pleased to find shirts that actually fit me at Value Village (I have weirdly long arms), a set of six handmade pottery goblets, and a hand-stitched quilt. Ah, thrift shop, how I love thee.

Maren has molars coming in. Isn't that crazy? It seems like only yesterday we were waiting for those first little bottom teeth to come through. Sigh.

We spent last night at the amusement park. Maren loves rides. She literally runs from one to another, fairly bursting with happiness and excitement, squealing and laughing, her eyes all sparkling. Malcolm enjoys them, but he's more of a laidback, play-it-cool kind of dude. After a few hours he came around to trying the more daring rides and even went on the roller coaster for the first time. Pretty exciting stuff.
We tried a new strategy today. Our family doesn't go trick-or-treating, but we do give the kids treat bags on Halloween night. Instead of spreading the candy consumption out (so that they get candy every day for a week or two), this time we let them eat as much as they wanted, reminding them to pay attention to how their tummies were feeling. Malcolm was feeling a little sick-ish tonight.
I don't remember whether or not my family had limits on how much candy we could eat from our trick-or-treating bags... but I do remember sitting in my bed at Easter and eating an entire chocolate bunny in one afternoon.

Wow, so Mitch is ONLY eating foods from that list? He's really cutting a lot of stuff out in order to nail this down, huh? That's NUTS! Not even beans make the cut? I'll let you know if I come across any recipe ideas, friend. Oh... does that mean he didn't get to enjoy ANY candy on Halloween?

Yep, that's all the items in the program. The idea is to slowly add foods back in so that he will be able to identify anything that seems to throw his system out of whack. Hopefully it will be worth it!

When I was getting sick a lot after eating, I went to a naturopathic doctor who tested me with this weird machine and she nailed down the 34 foods I had intolerences to! Some were severe and I had to cut them out competely, and others were mild or moderate that I could have three to four times a week. She also tested me for enzymes that would help break down the foods once I started adding them back into my diet (about three months after following the never-four times a week system). Just thought I would mention it! It was really helpful and only took about an hour!

Well Mel, each halloween you guys weren't overly restricted on eating candy, as long as meals were eaten. My theory was, the sooner it is eated, the sooner it will go. Actually, all of you didn't really go into overdrive with your treats.
And Mitch, I will be keeping my eyes open for some meal ideas with your restricted diet.
Hello Maren and Malcolm, I hope that you are enjoying school and the pretty fall leaves that have fallen. It was snowing here today, and the ground is turning white. If we get enough snow, I will try to build a snowman, and send a picture to you. If you have any suggestions as to how I can decorate him or her, I would enjoy hearing from you.

I read the list through a few times...but all I can think of is Mmmmm, soup. If you boil the veggies then pop 'em in the blender, you can trick yourself into thinking it's a cream soup. (I do that quite often).

I don't have any recipe ideas for you, but a friend of mine played around with her Omega intake and found it helpful. So, it's something Mitch could consider. Apparently, people in our society don't take in as much Omega as they used to and some are now studying to see if there's a link between that and mood.
