This is a medal I got from a chess tournament. I was in second place. I'm in grade one and I beat somebody in grade five in the chess tournament!
It was fun. I didn't win the first game, but the rest I did. It gave me lots of help because I'm going to a district chess tournament. I'm really excited about going to the districts.

Whoa! That's awesome! Congratulations Maren! I wish I could have been there to see you beat the fifth grader! (Mel, what did he/she do? Were they totally shocked? It must have been kind of funny.) Who taught you to play chess?
That's so cool, Maren! I hope you have a wonderful time at the district tournament!
Wow Maren, sounds like you have worked really hard to master the game of chess! And now you are going to the districts! When is that? Will you be playing children your age or all ages? You should try to beat your dad at a game of chess! I bet he would really like that :)
Maren, our precious girl doodle bug, CONGRATULATIONS!
We are so happy for you. We know you have loved learning this game.
Can we wear your medal for a minute some day?

Janet: I'm proud of me beating that fifth grader, also. It was Papa that told me how to play chess.
Janice: I also hope that I have a wonderful time at the district tournament. I hope I get a medal.
Mandi: The district chess tournament is February 2nd, 2008. I think I'm going to play children that are different ages. And I want to tell you what, also... my dad and Aidan's dad are going to be there keeping a watch over the children that are at the district chess tournament that are at my school. I did work really hard at learning chess and I can beat my brother. And I can beat my mom sometimes.
Barb: Yeah, I think you can wear my medal for a minute someday. I really like chess! Do you know how to play chess and do you also like chess?
Hello Maren,
Sounds like you REALLY like chess, and winning medals while having fun, is a bonus.
Enjoy your time at the districts, will look forward to seeing a few pictures of you playing.
Go Maren Go!!!!!!! Go Maren Go!!!!!
I will tell you what the day is: it's next Saturday, February the ninth, 2008. Why it's a different day is because the roads are too slippery. Goodbye! I love you.
