Is anyone else as unimpressed and slightly stressed as I am about the onslaught of recalls for products made in China? Who knows what will end up on the recall list six months or a few years from now! Even Maren began to ask questions a few months ago the ubiquity of the "MADE IN CHINA" stamp, which has led to some interesting (hopefully age-appropriate) discussions about fair labour practices and environmental stewardship. If you have children or are giving gifts to children this Christmas, this blog may be helpful. Given that even some products I expected would be okay (like Melissa & Doug's educational and well-crafted wooden toys, puzzles, and games), we could all use a little guidance in navigating the consumer maze. Not Made In China isn't an exhaustive list, but it's a good place to start seeing what else is available.
Or you can opt out of the commercial consumption this year... make a financial gift to a struggling family or entrepeneur on behalf of someone you love, cruise your local farmer's market, make a gift of your time and abilities, give a membership, cover the cost of a hobby class that interests your loved one, craft something yourself... the possibilities are endless! Have a look at Buy Nothing Christmas for more alternatives, if you're interested.
