Save Darfur... Again... Still...

Save Darfur is an alliance committed to raising public awareness about the ongoing genocide and urging leaders into unified action. They are probably one of the highest profile groups working on behalf of Darfur, at least in this part of the world. (Their website is a great place to learn more about what has been happening in this troubled region of Sudan if you don't know much about it.)

Peace-making in Darfur has been complicated, to say the least. Resolutions, ceasefires, aid, and peacekeeping forces have been promised and then been blocked or never materialized many times. This summer, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution authorizing deployment of peacekeeping troops in July, but the international community is stalling again on delivering on their promises.

Enter you and Save Darfur. Their current campaign goal is to send 100,000 messages to President Bush by September 18th (when the U.N. General Assembly meets), urging the U.S. to uphold its commitment to support the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission. This is one of those things where one person really can make a difference, as your voice is added to 83,000 or so others.

Do something today to help: please take a minute to click here and send a letter. And as a bonus, you can edit the text of the letter to call Mr. Bush a baboon, if you like! (Just kidding. Well... you can, but I'm not sure how effective that would be.)
