Cut to the Chase

"Malcolm, are you getting dressed?"

"Well, Papa, I... just... there was this thing that I was seeing and it just isn't there now, so I just was doing that because I am just getting ready and... the thing is... it's really weird because I don't where it is because I was just getting my shirt off, but then... it... just... and I can't get my shirt because... when you put the shirt... on your head... I just was noticing that when you put the shirt on your head, it's really weird...."

One great tip I learned from a friend was(if moving only a short distance)to make several trips over a few days transporting dresser drawers full of clothing, toy storage units full of toys, dishes in dishpans, etc. to cut down on as much actual "packing and boxing" as possible. Then,on moving day, you'll just have the (much lighter)dressers sans drawers, etc. and - less "unpacking" and fewer boxes to dispose of.

Huge life saver and mega time saver for us was to have EVERYTHING packed and ready to go when the help arrives on moving day. We moved all the boxes into one room of the apartment so it was quick and easy for everyone to just grab a box and go to the truck. We also had each one clearly labelled with what room the box was to go in in our new house. I then had a map for the one person I delegated to direct people coming off of the truck in the new house. So that if the box said bedroom 2 for example they could quickly tell the person where to go. Another thing that really unloaded some extra stress was that when we moved out from our apartment we still had a couple days left in it so that we could go back and clean and not need to worry about doing that as well on moving day. Not sure if this helps or not. Have fun and lots of snacks :)

sorry commenting again....totally agree Barb...good thought....another thing we did was just grab clothes out of the closet and lay them in the trunk and then grab them right from the trunk and into the closet in your new place. I didn't pack all of my dishes. I just placed them in a box, drove carefully and then unpacked right away a couple days before moving (also did this with all my plants). Oh one more thing and then I'll shut up...sorry this is totally my thing...how sad is that? Pick a bright colored box or two...the ones that will really stand out...and have those labelled as necessity boxes...those things that you will need right away that evening after you're exhausted from the move. That way you're not digging around in boxes to try to find things that evening. You can go right to the box with the toothbrushes, towels, Pj's, etc. K, really I'm done now :)

i agree with both, i didn't pack my clothes, i just bring them over in the drawers or the hangers. also make sure your bed is set up first, moving makes you tired!!!

Great ideas everyone. I have moved many times, and I have to agree with the life saver tips. Have access to things you will need that night and the next day, personal hygiene stuff, a few dishes. Absolutely get the beds set up first with a sleeping bag and pillows. Hopefully you will have someone bring a meal or two over for you to alleviate cooking over the stove. Try not to unload everything in one day, as I tend to do, get rest, and you will have more energy to do the task at hand. Good luck, utilize all the help that anyone offers, be it the children, cleaning, meals etc. Wish I were there to help.
