Playing School

Maren decided yesterday that she was going to teach Malcolm to read, with lots of hints and "repeat after me." She was pretty pleased with the results and Malcolm felt so proud of himself. Very cute, the whole thing!

I was very surprised, though, when I served alphabet-shaped pretzels for snack and Malcolm wanted me to make words for him to sound out... and he could do it!

He's familiar with most of the letter sounds from Maren's phonics homework throughout preschool and kindergarten, I guess. So although I wouldn't say he's now reading and we'll skip straight to grade one, thank you very much, he actually can sound out some short words successfully.

And boy, is he excited when he does!

Wow Malcolm, you are very smart...good job! Did you know that Jason loves making words with those pretzels as well?

That picture of him Mel is great! When does he start kindergarten?

Malcolm, I can't believe you can read words all by yourself! What an accomplishment for a boy who's only 4!!

I didn't know how to read before.

Erin, Jason thought it was very funny that Jason likes to make words too. (^_^)

He just turned four, so he won't be starting kindergarten until Fall 2008. We're planning for him to go to preschool at the synagogue this fall, like Maren did.
