I'll Get You, My Pretty... and Your Little Dog, Too!

I had a hankering for some old time Wizard of Oz last night. (Who doesn't, every now and then?) My long-suffering husband begrudgingly resigned himself to an evening of Technicolor musical fantasy. (This is the same man who once rented Gumby: The Movie for Valentine's Day when we were dating. Ahhh, true love....)

Anyway, Judy Garland et al. reminded me of Gregory Maguire's amazing revisionist telling of the story, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. He has done a few other retellings, including Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and Mirror, Mirror. I expected a tongue-in-cheek satire and was surprised by the depth of the story. This isn't a spoof; it's a respectable piece of literature exploring the nature of good and evil.

I haven't gotten yet to the sequel, Son of a Witch, but it's on my "To Read" list. And once the third in the Wicked Cycle releases, A Cowardly War, I'm sure that will make the list, too.
