Maren requested a castle birthday party this year, so we made everything as castle-y as we could. It takes some extra creativity to not spend a lot of money on a themed birthday party! It took some work, but it was good to have a fun project and to focus on celebrating her, especially since things have been so hard this year.
The party went pretty well, with a minimum of jousting, although a door was torn from the hinges. Dimuntive medieval celebrants can be a little boisterous!
Static electricity: the poor man's helium

The "brave queen's" throne room. I love that Maren took matters into her own hands and decided that she wasn't going to let the brave knights do all the rescuing!

The tower entrance. Both kids helped paint the cardboard, I coloured the stone outlines, and Maren designed the flags. Through a federal heritage grant, both castle towers will be relocated to Maren's bedroom and completely restored.

Queen Maren the Imperious (and Adorable)

The Queen's court (minus her brother), apparently unconcerned about the low-flying dragon. You may remember the dragon from such books as The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch.

The icing on the cake: the cake. Maren and Malcolm loved decorating the castle, and most of the candy actually made it to the cake. (In case you're wondering, Maren is turning five -- not twelve, as the candles would suggest.)
