Her Royal Highness

Maren's preschool class had a party today to celebrate Purim -- the Jewish holiday that commemorates how Queen Esther saved her people. One of the traditions of Purim is dressing up in costumes, so Maren chose to be Queen Esther. (A last minute switch from the previously planned firefighter costume.) Face painting, ice cream, and pinatas are more modern additions to the holiday, I think!

We're still back and forth on where Maren will attend kindergarten next year. I love the small class sizes and the spiritual component of her education at the synagogue. Too bad it isn't free!

She looks great! I gave one of my classes a brief lesson on Hannukah - I could have mentioned Purim too! I did draw the line at singig them the Hannukah Lattka song though.

I actually did some of those Hannukah songs this year! I played guitar for the preschool Hannukah concert... I Wonder Where the Oil Is, The Maccabees... it was great fun. I had to call Jeremy to consult on the chords, though. Hannukah Latke was conspicuously absent, to my disappointment.

Maren and Aidan both seemed to love the Purim tradition of going crazy with noisemakers whenever Haaman's name is said (to blot out his name), although it actually had kind of the opposite effect. They run around with shakers going, "Haaman! Haaman! Haaman!" Nuts!
